About Christina School District

History

Legislation passed in 1980 permitted the State Board of Education to divide the New Castle County School District into smaller districts, and the district was created on July 1, 1981.

From 1984 to 1988 it was the largest school district in Delaware. 

The district enacted a $28.6 million program to build two additional schools and expand four in 1988 due to the growth. The district planned to add capacity in Wilmington as it expected more grade 5-6 students enrolling.

Despite having 1,877 students in grades Kindergarten through 3rd grade, it had one active school and one that wasn’t yet open.

More than 14,000 students are served by the Christina School District in Delaware. The district serves the City of Newark and its suburbs as well as the City of Wilmington. 

Christina has a number of schools, including two early education centers, 14 elementary schools, 2 elementary/middle schools, 3 middle schools, and 3 traditional comprehensive high schools. The Brennen School(Delaware Autism Program) is located in the District, along with the Delaware School for the Deaf, the Middle School Honors Academy at Christiana High School, the Networks School for Employability Skills, and Sarah Pyle Academy.

The Christina School board has faced a battle with multiple referendums and some controversies.  A facebook group called Friends of Christina was established in 2013.
