Newark Delaware was first settled in Colonial America in the early 1700’s. It received an official Charter from King George II in 1758.
Shortly before receiving that Charter, in 1747 a small inn was built known as St. Patrick’s Inn and was burned down in 1848. Rumors include that George Washington stayed a night at St. Patrick’s Inn, and the famous surveyors Mason and Dixon made the tavern their base of operations. Perhaps the most famous rumor is that Edgar Allen Poe stayed a night there. The rumor also states that Poe cursed the Inn.
After St. Patrick’s Inn burned down, the land was bought and cleared. In 1851, the tavern was rebuilt and took the name Deer Park(named after the owners home Deer Park Farm). Deer Park is a destination for both local residents and people who just stop by Newark. Like the former Stone Balloon(now Washington House), Deer Park has always been a popular place with students. It is also one of the first places alumni stop by when they are in town. Popular with both University of Delaware students and professors, Deer Park has something for everyone.
