I am going slightly outside the Newark area for this, but it sure looks like fun! The Scottish Games Association presents the 51st annual Colonial Highland Gathering at the Fair Hill Race Track in Fair Hill, Maryland. This event will take place rain or shine and is from 8 a.m. -6 p.m.
Tickets are available at the gate for $15 per person and children under 12 are free. Well behaved, leashed dogs are permitted to attend (I think they are probably free too!). Competitions include piping, drumming, pipe bands, highland dancing, Scottish style fiddling and Athletics. Musical performances by:
- Albannach
- The Brigadoons
- Neil Emberg’s Hadrian’s Wall
- Charlie Zahm
- Carl Peterson
- Massing of the Pipe Bands
- Brandywine Dulcimer Fellowship
The Highland Heptathalon includes the following athletic events:
22 lb. Hammer Throw (Distance)
17 lb. Stone Putt (Distance)
56 lb. Weight Throw (Distance)
28 lb. Weight Throw (Distance)
Caber Toss (Accuracy)
20 lb. Sheaf Toss (Height)
56 lb. Weight Toss (Height)
There will also be a sheep dog trial, which will involve demonstation of the capabilities of the sheep dog. This demonstation should be a great deal of fun to watch as the dogs used are usually border collies renowned for their herding abilities. Here is a copy of the schedule of events for the day.
If you live in the Newark area and are looking for activities to do with your family, I think you will enjoy the Scottish Games. There are a lot of activities and events to keep you entertained and it is only a short drive from Newark Delaware.
